Blending is the formation of new words by combining parts of two words or a word plus a part of another word, as is shown by motel and medicare. Motel is combination of motor+hotel and medicare a combination of medical+care.
Clipping is another way of making a word which is to shorten a longer word by cutting a part off the original and using what remains instead, as is shown by quake and flu. Quake is the shortened form of earthquake and flu is the shortened form of ingfluenza.
