Virender Sehwag joined a cricket centre just outside New Delhi at the age of 13. He lived near the centre and often stayed there hitting balls after the sun went down, A men who was at the centre remembers Sehwag : ‘When all the other boys were sitting chatting Sehwag was still working hard and I thought to myself, “ That boy is going to play big cricket”, and I was right’
Sehwag has played for India many times and is especially popular because of his story of success. His parents weren’t rich, but they were able to pay $3 a month to the cricket centre.
When Virender was young , he broke a tooth practising and his father didn’t want him to play cricket any more, but his mother didn’t agree. She saw how important the sport was to her son.
Sehwag always phones his mother after matches and is very close to her. He talks about a wonderful sweet dish she makes for him. Sehwag opende his first restaurant in West Delhi in 2005. He plans to open many more restaurants across India, all selling healthy food without meat.
At the cricket centre, Sehwag sometimes practised late in the evening .
