Legend has it that in ancient China, rampant floods brought about untold misery and hardship to the people. Yu the Great made up his mind to bring the waters under control. He journeyed inland in a boat, but was stopped halfway by the torrential current. Fortunately, a yellow dragon came and bore the boat upstream. After years of persevering work, Yu succeeded in taming the waters. However, the dragon was too exhausted to return to the sea, and died at the foot of Xuebao Peak. Thus the place was named Huanglong.
