Severaldecadesago,Americansdumpedrawsewageintoriversandmanyindustrialplantsarenowstilldumpingchemicalpollutantsintolakes,riversandoceans.Oceansusedtobeandarestillbeingconsideredtobeareserveofseafood.Today,aftertheoceanshavebecomethehomeofallpollutants,thisuseoftheoceansisbeingreducedatanalarmingrate. Theworstpollutionthreatisconcentratedinandnearlargecities.Therethepeople-madepollutantsincreasinglysurpasstheabilityofairandwatertodilute(冲淡；稀释)thecontaminants(污染物)tosafelevels.Thenaturalecologicalcycledependsonplants,whichabsorbsomepollutantsandreleaseoxygentotheair.Butnearlargecities,naturalvegetationbecomesscarce,andintroducedtrees,ornamentalshrubsandgardensarefarfromadequateinabsorbingmotorvehicleandindustrialairpollutants.Finally,somepollutants,mostnotablyatomicwaste,maycontinuetocontaminateair,land,andwaterforthousandsofyears.Therefore,ecocrisis—ecocatastropheorecocide—hasbeenforsometimeoneofthemajorconcernsofnotonlytheecoactivistsandenvironmentalists,butofmanyscientistsofotherfieldsandthegovernmentauthoritiesofmanycountriesaswell.
