GlaciersinAntarcticaaremeltingfasterandacrossamuchwiderareathanpreviouslythought,adevelopmentthatthreatenstoraisesealevelsworldwideandforcemillionsofpeopletofleelow-lyingareas.ResearchersoncebelievedthatthemeltingwaslimitedtotheAntarcticPeninsula,anarrowtongueoflandpointingtowardSouthAmerica.Butsatellitedataandautomatedweatherstationsnowindicateitismorewidespread.ThemeltingalsoextendsallthewaydowntowhatiscalledwestAntarctica.Bytheendofthecentury,theacceleratedmeltingcouldcausesealevelstoclimbby3to5feet-levelssubstantiallyhigherthanpredictedbyamajorscientificgroupjusttwoyearsago.Makingmattersworse,theiceshelvesthatholdtheglaciersbackfromtheseaarealsoweakening. Foryears,thecontinentatthebottomoftheworldseemedtobetheonlyplaceontheplanetnotexperiencingclimatechange.PreviousresearchindicatedthattemperaturesacrossmuchofAntarcticawerestayingthesameorslightlycooling.ThebigsurprisewasexactlyhowmuchglaciersaremeltinginwesternAntarctica,avastlandmassonthePacificOceansideofthecontinentthatisnexttotheSouthPoleandincludestheAntarcticPeninsula.Theglaciersareslippingintotheseafasterbecausethefloatingiceshelfthatwouldnormallystopthem—usually650t0980feetthick—ismelting.Andtheglaciers'dischargeismakingasignificantcontributiontoincreasingsealevels. Together,alltheglaciersinwestAntarcticaarelosingatotalofaround114billiontonsperyearbecausethemeltingismuchgreaterthanthenewsnowfall.That'sequivalenttothecurrentmasslossfromthewholeoftheGreenlandicesheet,Newresearchfoundthatmeltingglacierswilladdatleast7inchestotheworld'ssealevel—andthat'sifcarbondioxidepollutionisquicklycappedandthenreduced.
