Eighty-sevenchildrenagedbetween12and16fromBeijingandTianjinattendedtheone-weektrainingprogrammecalledYouthDiscoverydirectedbyMotorolaUniversity′s(MU)instructorsandmarketingspecialists.Thechildrenlearnedaboutdealingwithapracticalproblem-marketingandworkedoutamarketingplanbythemselves.Lastweek26childrenofMotorolaemployeesinTianjincompletedtheirtrainingintheMU-TianjinLearningCenter. Throughthetrainingprogramme,childrenlearnthowtogetinformationthroughdifferentkindsofsources,determineend-userneeds,makeupmessagesofvaluetocustomers,andcommunicateusingvariousmeansandequipment. Educatorsactedonlyasteamdirectors,providingchildrentodiscovertheirownanswers.ThechildrengavetheirsolutionstoMotorola′smanagementandtheirparentsonthelastdayoftheprogramme. Thechildren,mostofwhomwereprimaryandmiddleschoolstudents,presentedthemselvesfreely.Thestudentssaidthattheypreferredtheopenandpracticalwayoflearning. YouthDiscovery,startedbyMotorola′sformerpresidentRobertGalvin,designedandcarriedoutbyMotorolaUniversity,aimedtobringthetalentsofyoungpeopleintofullplayandencouragedthemtodiscoverhowtheirskillscancontributetoateamtohelpitreachanaim.

Teaching Contents: The lesson is a passage about a special training plan programme for children. Teaching Objectives: (1) Knowledge objectives ② Students can learn the following words and expressions: entrepreneur, attend, deal with, carry out, encourage,contribute to. ② Students can understand the reading passage deeply. (2) Ability objective Students can develop their reading ability by skimming and scanning practice. (3) Emotional objectives ① By discussing and group work, their awareness of cooperation can be aroused. ② After learning this class, students may be more clear about their future planning. Teaching Key and Difficult Points: (1) Teaching key point Students can get the main idea and some detailed information about the passage. (2) Teaching difficult point To understand how one person' s skills can contribute to a team to help it reach an aim. Major Steps: Step 1 Pre-reading (4 minutes) Present some words that appear in the passage and make students have a prediction about the main idea of thepassage aecording to them: business, Motorola, training, children. Students can discuss with their desk-mates andshare their predictions. (Justification: By doing so, students will be curious about the reading passage, which will do good for the classlearning.) Step 2 While-reading (8 minutes) (1) Fast-reading Ask students to read the passage as quickly as they can to check their predictions about the main idea of thispassage, and then answer the question: How many children participate in the training programme and how old arethey (Justification: To help students understand this passage quickly so that they can improve their skimming skill.) (2) Careful-reading Lead students to read again and then tell the following statements true(T) or false(F) and explain the reasons: ①The instructors taught the students how to work out a marketing plan.() ② The programme was started, designed and carried out by Motorola University. () ③ The programme aims at developing the children' s ability to solve practical problems.() ④ The programme is very common in Tianjin.() ⑤ The educators played as businessmen in the programme. () ⑥ Youth Discovery is a great success because the children' s parents took part in it. () (Justification: By reading the passage carefully, students will better understand the passage, and their scanningskills can also be enhanced.) Step 3 Post-reading (8 minutes) (1) Retelling: Ask students to retell the passage according to the key words in Pre-reading part. (2) Presentation: If you are the educator of the Motorola University, what programme can you come up with tobring the business talent of students into full play (Justification: Through these activities, students will have a better understanding of the passage and be given anopporttmity to express them.)
