The reality is that most students have to work after school or during the summer. Few schools, however, teach the most basic skills students need to succeed in applying for jobs, interviewing, and finding employment. I attended three high schools in two states, and none made a connection between academic courses and the world of work I will face when I graduate. I was taught English but never shown how to write a resume. I took public speaking but was never trained how to handle a job interview. My economics course never explained the hiring process. The school board justifies teaching sex education because “school has to prepare students for life.” What could be more important than teaching young people how to succeed in a competitive job market?
