the U.S. two-party system
the U.S. two-party system: The United States has a two-party system. This means that two major political parties dominate politics at the federal, state and local levels. There have been four periods in the history of political parties in America and all these four periods are characterized by a two-party system. At present, the two major parties are the Democrats and the Republicans, with the former favoring a larger role for the government in national affairs and the latter advocating a smaller government.
